The word "companion" derives from Latin com- (together) + panis (bread) = those who share bread together. This etymology carries profound Eucharistic and communal resonance — it evokes the Last Supper, the early Christian community sharing bread and life together, and Teresa of Avila's emphasis on friendship with God and with others in the spiritual journey.
